I started business
over six years ago. On numerous occasions I’m asked, "What advice would
you give to someone wanting to start their own business?" My response
always begins with a response that would seemingly have nothing to do with
business. “Get over your fear and 90% of
the battle has been won”. For many of us FEAR – False Expectations Appearing
Real – is what keeps us from experiencing our full potential.
We are apprehensive that if we let go of our regular nine to five for example, then our bills and other obligations will not be met. But then if we are true to ourselves we would admit that our obligations are not being met anyway – even with a job. It is a fact that over 90% of the things we fear in life rarely ever become our realities.

How many of us
have dreams of becoming a successful author, entrepreneur, preacher, scientist,
entertainer, etc? Yet we ignore the deep yearning in our hearts to be the best
we can be. We settle for mediocrity and second best…We are afraid of our own
success and so we place limitations on ourselves. We fear ever realizing the
big dreams we have; we fear that somehow we may not be able to handle it. You would be surprised to know how much you
can handle if you allow yourself to. After all, how would you know if you do
not try?
There are many
creative individuals here that are doing their best to ensure that the world
gets exposed to their talent. Take for example, Tesanne Chin decision to
audition on NCB’s ‘The Voice’. Chin a great singer aside, the auditions could
have easily gone another way without any chairs turning. Yet she was willing to
make herself vulnerable, putting her emotions on the line in the quest for a
higher level of achievement. Truth is though, whether or not the chairs turned,
she would have won anyway because she would have already gained publicity to a
much wider audience. I am most elated about the recognition Chin is getting
from this experience. It is good to know that the powers that be are doing
their part in advancing the cause of another strong Jamaican.
Speaking of
advancing cause, The “I Believe Initiative” of the Governor General of Jamaica,
His Excellency, the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen continues to inspire
Jamaicans to greatness. Sir Allen believes that ‘there is nothing wrong with
Jamaica that cannot be fixed by what is right with Jamaica’. Let us continue to offer our support to this
cause. Look for the ‘I Believe Initiative’ on Facebook and become a fan.
